<\/a>Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. \u201cBy what authority are you doing these things?\u201d they asked. \u201cAnd who gave you this authority?\u201d<\/p>\nJesus replied, \u201cI will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John\u2019s baptism\u2014where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?\u201d<\/p>\n
They discussed it among themselves and said, \u201cIf we say, \u2018From heaven,\u2019 he will ask, \u2018Then why didn\u2019t you believe him?\u2019 But if we say, \u2018Of human origin\u2019\u2014we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.\u201d<\/p>\n
So they answered Jesus, \u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he said, \u201cNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”<\/p>\n
