Finished!

Mina’s afghan is finished:

Mina’s mermaid afghan is finished!

The finished product is 37.5″ wide, and 27.5″ (roughly Mina’s height floor to waist”) to the beginning of the tail. This part is all 5 double-crochet shell pattern – 20 shells per row, 27 rows to tail.

I then joined the two edges and did 4 rows of single crochets, decreasing the number of stitches as I went (sorry, don’t remember how man I did each row). On the 5th row I started to increase again, as well, I did a front-post double crochet at each side, so I would know where the sides are. I did three rows like this before starting the alternating front and back post double crochets. I did all the increases on the sides of the tail. After 5 rows I started each fin separately, decreasing at the inside (centre) on each round, while increasing at the outside edge at least every second row. I really did this by eye-balling it to decide if I should increase of leave it the same. After the last (9th from the dividing) row I used a single crochet to close up the fin. Then I did the other side — because I don’t write these things down the two sides are not exactly the same, but I don’t think the wee girl is going to notice or mind.

I am quite pleased with the results. The only down side I see now is that it is quite heavy, not sure Mina will need all this warmth in sunny California.

Next project: something for Volker – Kwazii

Another day, another party

Joanne and Mel (mother and “auntie” of Katie, Brennan partner) came to Kitchener  from Columbus, Ohio, for a week long visit. The evening before they left to go home we celebrated Joanne’s birthday at the Malleck’s house. Here are pictures (all taken with my iPhone as I didn’t bring any other camera) of that event.

A Pony Party

Nathan and Karolina’s girls turned 3 last week and on Saturday we celebrated with a My Little Pony birthday party. Here are pictures from that event.

Making Mermaids

A few days ago I got a message from Trina:

Screen Shot 2015-07-22 at 4.44.29 PMI’ve booked my tickets for September — I will be in California for the wee girl’s 6th (!) birthday. This could be a good birthday present. Being too cheap to buy a pattern, I looked online and found this free one: YARNutopia By Nadia Fuad – mermaidafghan3sizes.pdf. I’ll use it as a guide to make my own.

This past weekend my friend Sandy went to the Southampton Market. There she found Benat’s Jacquards yarn in a variegated green, purple, aqua and white, three skeins for $8. I thought these colours would look good on a mermaid’s tail.IMG_0574This week all the First Mennonite Church pastors are away at the Mennonite World Conference Assembly in Harrisburg, PA, so it has been very quiet in the church office. Consequently, I have taken my project to work and have been able to get a good start on it.

The afghan part of it is a simple shell stitch. I am using a 6.0mm hook. This is going to make a rather heavy afghan, I think, especially for California. I wonder if using a larger hook would have made a difference? I started with a chain 121 stitches long. That now seems wider than it would need to be for a child, but I will wait until it is finish to judge for sure.

IMG_0577 IMG_0578I’m looking forward to getting it done.

Meditation on Ephesians 3:16-19

Praying in colour is a way to talk with God. I’ve been meditating on this short passage, the writer’s prayer for people in Ephesus he loved. I decided to used colours to make various ideas stand out.Eph 3.16-19 Gold: I love that this prayer starts with God’s riches in glory and ends with the fullness of God.

Green: The writer invokes God, the Spirit, Jesus and then all the saints. Before us. After us. All of us.

Pink: “You” and “your” is talking about a group of people, not just one person. We need each other, this life is not for lone living.

Purple: Our hearts and inner being are critical to knowing…

Red: love – God’s, Christ’s, the Spirit’s, the saint’s, in all dimensions. Love is the central point.

Blue: This is what the writer wants for us – strength, power, rooted and grounded, comprehension, to know beyond knowledge, to be filled with God, to perfectly reflect our Creator.

Such a beautiful prayer!
