Celebrating Family

Yesterday the Bender family held a celebration service for their matriarch, my Mom’s last surviving sibling, Ellen Margaret Bender.

It was good to see so many family!

I took the opportunity to snap a few pictures of the newest member of our family with her Mom and Great-Grandma. And Barbie Bender took a picture of a bunch of us Gingerich Girls:

Travellers’ News

photo“Having dinner at Misha’s apartment. Waiting to see if Typhoon Haiyan is going to reach Laos. Luckily it veered North East. Chris and Sheena are in Vientienne for a few days.” (click on thumbnail pictures to enlarge; click on picture again to return to thumbnail)

Misha has been in Vientienne for almost a year, teaching English and having great adventures (her blog is here). She will be coming home mid-December, I believe.

Although I have a vague notion of where Laos is I needed to check the map to see where Vientienne is.

This message also made me curious about the path of Typhon Haiyan. I found a map of that too. http://mashable.com/2013/11/08/typhoon-haiyan-tracker/

Kiwi Crates

Trina bought a subscription to Kiwi Crates for Mina. Once a month a box of creative materials arrives by mail. Mina loves “Mina mail” — when picking up the package at the complex office Mina knew immediately which package was hers.

The first activity Mina and I did together was making a sailboat. The boat was very simple yet fun to make. The base was a foam shape with a slit for the mast and another three in the rear for the rudder. The kit contained paint to decorate the sails, but it needed 24 hours to dry so we decorated two sails and left the third one plain (until the next day) so we could take our boat out to the water fountain right away. It sailed quite well!

Mommy and Mina made a kite today. An amazingly simple design that worked really well. Mina had a wonderful time running around with her kite. Pirate Gramma had to give chase a few times, and even got that kite once!
